The rich reds and pinks of rubies and blues of sapphires have held fascination since gemstones were first used for jewellery. Synthetic corundum can be created in virtually all colours. The blue variety is called synthetic sapphire and the red variety is called synthetic ruby.

Synthetic corundum is one of the hardest stones except for the diamond and it has an excellent toughness.

Produced by flame fusion

Produced in laboratories using the flame fusion method, synthetic corundum has the same properties and chemical structure as naturally occurring ruby and sapphire.

Growing synthetic stones

The flame fusion method was developed in 1902 by the French chemist, Auguste Verneuil, in order to grow synthetic rubies. The method is still in use today.

Durability

Rated 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Synthetic ruby and synthetic sapphire are the hardest stones except for the diamond. This, combined with excellent toughness, makes them very durable and ideal for all types and styles of jewellery.
